Six questions: is it an OBJECT rather than a surface; is it fully visible; does the viewer already know how it should look without being told; can it be said in one sentence; does it survive three seconds at the size it will actually be seen; can the viewer verify it themselves. The mobile-scale test: crop to the tightest usable frame, resize to ~300 px wide, look without marking where the error is. Searching the entire archive produced exactly one candidate for a genuine random error and it was wrong, so: absence of an error is not proof a photo is real.

Real log: 21 attempts across two short videos = $4.50. Same 8-second shot on four models: Veo 3.1 Lite $0.64, Gemini Omni Flash $0.83 (720p), Veo 3.1 Fast $0.96, Veo 3.1 Standard $3.20 — the dearest won nothing this shot, drifted furthest from the source and invented a reflection no other attempt had. Veo accepts only 4, 6 or 8 seconds and bills what it generates, so a 2-second cut is paid as four: an 18-shot reel is 36 s finished and 72 s billed.

Flat design with Slovak text: the cheapest, gpt-image-2 at medium, won 5 of 8 tests and cost $0.44 for nine images against $0.90–0.91. Same face across twenty images: the dearer gemini-3-pro-image won, because it accepts five reference photos of one person per call. Video from one photo: the cheapest tier was the most usable. Costs that are not in any price list: Ideogram charges a flat rate per image regardless of resolution; gpt-image-2 charges a square about 28% more than a portrait; xAI's published $0.080/s billed ~$0.251/s at 1080p on the real invoice.
- [Why a generated photo looks generated](https://velocis.sk/studie/preco-to-vyzera-ako-ai): diffusion models are trained to remove noise, and fine skin texture is statistically almost indistinguishable from noise, so the training objective removes it. Prompting cannot undo that: four sentences asking for untouched skin moved texture by +3.9%, less than the measurement's own spread. What works is a chain after generation — re-render the face alone at 1024 px and composite it back (the only step that ADDS pixels), then a weak sensor signature at strength 0.18 with a hard cap of 0.2. It is measurable: real shot noise grows with the square root of luminance, measured in LINEAR light. Real cameras 0.099–0.372, raw model output 0.017–0.060, after the chain 0.197. It is not an AI detector — one Velocis generated image sits at 0.268 unaided. Also: a phone cannot make creamy background blur in a normal wide shot.

A generated face holds only while the set already contains the face the shot needs; the gap is a missing COMBINATION, not a missing axis. Six technically good photos produced two visibly different people because not one had a smile with the head turned. Eleven shots, eight mandatory. Anchor each shot to the reference whose head already points the right way — the single largest improvement measured, larger than changing the model or rewriting the prompt, and it was not about face size (the two worst were anchored to the LARGEST faces). Never anchor to your own output: every photo one step from the same original. The promotion trap cost weeks — a new main reference was never compared with the one it replaced and the drift survived four rounds; compare at equal FACE size, not equal image size.
